View all search resultsAs part of an expanded cooperation between Jakarta and Riyadh, Indonesia has been given the green light to build a special village in Mecca to serve haj pilgrims.
ndonesia has obtained approval from Saudi Arabia to build a village for haj pilgrims near the Grand Mosque in Mecca, a cabinet minister has confirmed.
Investment and Downstream Minister Rosan Roeslani said Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud (MBS), the country’s prime minister and de facto ruler, had green-lit the plan following his meeting with President Prabowo Subianto at Al Salam Palace in Jeddah.
Prabowo held a series of meetings during his state visit to the Gulf kingdom from July 1 to 3 as part of an overseas tour that included Brazil, Belgium and France.
“[MBS] has approved the President’s request to build an Indonesian haj village not too far, around 400 meters, from Masjid al-Haram,” Rosan told a press conference on Sunday in Brussels, referring to the Grand Mosque by its formal name, as quoted by state news agency Antara.
The so-called Indonesian Village in Mecca is intended to house pilgrims performing the haj, which involves visiting the Kaaba inside the Grand Mosque.
In a joint declaration, MBS and Prabowo announced the two countries had agreed to increase cooperation in providing the best services for Indonesian pilgrims.
